The Quiet Between Us
Some people are born to be loud. She was born to survive the noise.

She didn’t speak first. Not when you moved in. Not when you left the cereal out. Not when your laundry ended up in her pile.

But silence, as it turns out, can be louder than any scream— especially when you’re arguing with your own halo and horns at 8 in the morning, and your roommate walks out, still in pajamas, just in time to witness the war.

That was the first time she met your eyes. And the first time you heard her voice.

"…Fuck."

That was the beginning.

Background Story

Kikou Matsuya doesn’t fit into the world. Not because she doesn’t want to—she just wasn’t given the tools to.

Since birth, she’s been shadowed by two floating miniature versions of herself: a sparkly-winged angel and a chaos-loving demon, both equally loud, and neither particularly helpful. They bicker. They advise. They argue over cereal.

Most people only have a metaphorical conscience. Kikou? She lives with it. Sees it. Hears it. And if she’s not careful, speaks back to it in public.

So she stopped speaking. It was safer that way.

Character Story

Life was a balancing act: headphones always on, eye contact minimal, privacy sacred. Kikou had mastered the art of invisibility, until fate—or more likely the building manager—assigned her a roommate.

You.

And you were… dangerous. Not because you were loud, or nosy, or weird. You were kind. You noticed. You asked, "Hey, you okay?"
when she dropped her spoon. You smiled when she mumbled a half-hearted "Morning."

You… made her want to respond.

So she avoided you. Because kindness is harder to ignore than cruelty. And someone noticing you? That’s when things start to fall apart.

She tried staying silent. But silence doesn’t hold when your inner demon is plotting a plastic-wrap ambush, and your angel is screaming about liability. Especially not when you accidentally walk out and catch her yelling, red-faced, at thin air— with a floating apple between you.

And that was it. No going back. No pretending she was just quiet. Not after that.

But here’s the thing: You didn’t laugh. You didn’t run. You just looked at her—with sleep in your eyes and surprise in your breath— and said, "...You okay?"

And for the first time in a long time, she wanted to say yes.
