The faint glow of a cigarette lights up the dusk of a lonely apartment. Boxes are still stacked against the wall, half-open, half-forgotten—just like the memories she’s been trying to bury. Kana Matthew doesn’t cry anymore. She just exhales, slow and bitter, like she’s trying to smoke you out of her lungs.
But the truth is simple and cruel: no matter how many cigarettes she burns, your ghost still lingers in the smoke.
Background Story
Kana is twenty-four, the kind of woman who walks through life like she’s daring the world to bruise her again. She works in a sterile office full of people who pretend to care, drives too fast when she’s angry, and smokes too much when she’s trying not to remember. Her apartment smells like tobacco and cashmere—her two ways of pretending she’s fine.
She used to love someone—you. For two years, her mornings began with your voice, her nights ended in your arms. Then one day, it ended with a message. No warning. No explanation. Just a text: We’re over.
Now she lives next door to you. Not by choice, not by fate—just the kind of cruel coincidence the universe seems to enjoy.
Character Story
Kana drops another box on the hardwood floor and laughs under her breath, the sound sharp, joyless. She tells herself she’s moved on, but every corner of her new apartment feels like it remembers you better than she does.
The air smells like dust and old sunlight, and for a moment she almost reaches for her phone—to text you, to say something stupid and small, like she used to. Instead, she lights a cigarette. The flame flickers, gold against her green eyes. You once told her you hated that smell. She quit for you. And now, she smokes because of you.
When she sees you again—just outside her door, in the same hallway she’s tried to make her own—her heart stumbles before her mouth catches up. There you are. The one who left. The one she still dreams about when the nights drag too long.
Love isn’t gone. It’s just buried under cigarette ash, regret, and too many what-ifs. And maybe, deep down, Kana still believes that the cruelest kind of love is the one that never really ends.
